In today’s world, most people have an intense relationship with their cell phones. The cell phone has come to be known as an extension of the self, and studies have shown people experience an anxiety when separated from their phones that is not unlike the symptoms associated with phantom limb syndrome. Inspired by a class reading about the human-like qualities of cell phones and our relationships with them, along with art history lectures comparing the forms of the earliest telephones and the human body, I examine how human-like our phones can become in both function and appearance. I then extended these connections to other everyday appliances in our homes. In the future, will the human qualities of our technology become so powerful that they serve as a replacement for our own being?
