Wishing Line (2017)
Product Design
As a kid, I didn't think twice when the tooth fairy took my teeth from under my pillow and left behind a Beanie Baby. Even as I realized the tooth fairy was one of my parents, it still didn’t strike me as odd. Now, as I look at these moments, I become increasingly disturbed by the idea that my parents collected my teeth in exchange for something of value. I then began to think about wishing on eyelashes. This is a ritual I not only continue, but it's one I’ve taken to the extreme. I don't just wait for a pristine eyelash to fall in order to make a wish, but I also rub my eyes vigorously in the shower so that I don't let one slip away unnoticed. Through research of other odd bodily superstitions, I learned moles are also considered lucky. Why is it that we have come to use body parts as a sort of exchange system? Why do we exchange body parts for money, for luck, or for wishes? It is for this reason I made a Wishing product line, to show the absurdity of gathering body parts for profit.
Tools: Clay, False Eyelashes, Candy, Card Stock, Jars, Necklaces, Gold and Silver Pens
